Celebration was our final and in my opinion most fun unit for the semester! This unit was allowed us to express what we like/want to celebrate and I really enjoyed it. Our first studio inspired by Nick Cave’s work was to make finger puppets, and I chose to make a finger puppet Christmas tree. Christmas is without a doubt my favorite part of the year! This is one of the celebrations I love most. There is nothing I love more than the feeling of Christmas Spirit, which is why I decided to represent this through our first studio!!
Our second studio was a graphic design lesson, which was a very new and cool experience. All the time I look at the cover at newspapers or ads in the papers and it was fun to put together one of my own that celebrates something that I do.The Art of Norman Rockwell – part 1, “Rockwell’s work featured themes he would return to again and again; celebrating the common place, change and invention, honoring the American spirit, tradition, and the past. My graphic design project I based on Women Running. Running and the sport of track is one that is often looked over, especially for women. I want to make a magazine cover that celebrated the sport and the women you endure the training to be a part of it. As Bang (1991) explains, "Our feelings arise because we see pictures as extensions of the real world" As a female racer myself it was fun to celebrate such an influential part of my life through this studio.
In our last studio we had our choice to make whatever we wanted. I make a collage that corresponded with the Art Lesson plan that we had assigned. The lesson and collage are based on the theme of heroes. The lesson has student make a collage that includes a person they consider a personal hero and another who they consider a historical hero. So for my student choice studio I decided to make the collage that my student would in the lesson. For my historical hero I decided to represent the firefighters in the September 11 attacks as a historical hero. I also put pictures of my Grandma in my collage to represent her as my personal hero. This was a celebration of ordinary people who are heroes in the eyes of the people around them. I was so happy I was able to celebrate some of the people I consider heroes through this final studio in the class.
This studio was definitely my favorite, I love celebrating!
