I believe that telling a story is one of the best and effective ways to teach and connect lessons to lives. Whether it is a life or school lesson, stories make things easier to relate to and can be a fun spin to learning. In this unit we used are art studios to tell stories. As Bang(2000) says"It is these 'emotions attached to remembered experiences' that seem largely to determine our present responses" (p. 73) These stories could be used to tell a simple fun tale or to enforce a more serious message. In our first studio we used Political/editorial cartoon to send a message. I related to mine to students verbally bullying others. In my cartoon I have the words from the Disney movie Bambi “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” written across the page and in the middle a drawing of a boy with a closed zipper instead of mouth. This is to give the deeper message that if what you have to say isn’t nice or is hurtful, do not say it. Words have such power and influence on people, it is important to reinforce that cruel words can cause a lot of pain in one’s life.
The second studio we did we once again made a picture that told a story that told a memory or something that connect to our lives. We used water paints to do this studio. In this studio I portrayed the story of what happened to my pet turtle as a little girl. When I was a child I had a pet turtle named speedy that somehow got out of its cage and ran away. I was devastated when Speedy ran away and never found out what happened to him. So in my studios I made a picture told what happened to speedy after he left my house and started his journey towards turtleville (where all the runaway turtles go). As Pink(2005) says "Stories capture the context, capture the emotions.... Stories are important cognitive events, for the encapsulate, into compact package, information, knowledge, context and emotion" (p. 103). This lighthearted story was a fun ending to my childhood memory.
The last studio we did we used found object to make mini sculptures. For this studio I teamed up with three of my classmates to create a recycling bin out of plastic bottles and paper plates. This project represented more or message than a story, but was my favorite studio in this unit. By using used plastic bottles that we found to make a recycling bin gave the message of how disposable and object like paper plates and plastic bottles are. These are things that people throw away without hesitation when they could easily be recycled. It is easy and effective to recycle these objects and one’s like it and something that everyone should do.
